The River East meal program is one of the many services offered to 55-plus members of our community by the River East Seniors Resource Finder.
Seniors resource finders were formerly known as community resource councils; they are non-profit organizations which provide support and services to older adults. The River East Seniors Resource Finder serves those living in East Kildonan, North Kildonan and Elmwood, helping keep them socially engaged.
The River East meal program is held at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Granite House (1100 Henderson Hwy.). It offers hot, nutritious, homemade meals in a social setting. For just $7, the meal includes an entrée, sides, dessert and coffee or tea.
The Parkside Plaza meal program runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in the social club room at 1630 Henderson Hwy. Both locations serve well under their capacities, so there is lots of room to join.
For $7.50 (the extra 50 cents covers the cost of the environmentally friendly take out container) the residents of 1590, 1630 and 1660 Henderson Hwy. can have the meals delivered to them from the Parkside Plaza location, and residents at 1100 and 1080 Henderson can have their meals delivered from the Granite House location. You can also pick up your meals.
Three times per month there’s even a free shuttle service — a van will pick you up and take you to the lunch at 1100 Henderson, then bring you home afterward. There is no cost (other than the cost of the meal) and pre-registration is required.
One meal a month is a Nosh & Know session, which includes lunch and a presentation on such topics as health or financial planning. This past month’s session featured a local author.
Meals are prepared by meal co-ordinator Robert Wanner (and Maria Toews on Fridays at 1100 Henderson), along with volunteers who help with meal preparation, setting tables, serving food and more. The program is grateful for the help of its volunteers and is always looking for more. How can you arrange to attend?
