We need to do our part in the fight against COVID-19

As the battle against COVID-19 begins in earnest, we need to be ever mindful of the contributions we can make as individuals against this threat by practising proper washing and coughing etiquette — not to mention following the direction of our health professionals who are tasked with fighting the virus on the frontline with all the attendant consequences to their personal health. 

I know from all the nurses I’ve spoken with who live in Elmwood and work in hospitals throughout the city, the healthcare system is already bursting at the seams during regular flu season with mandatory overtime for nurses and a shortage of beds. We know they are doing their best amid a shortage of intensive-care unit beds in Winnipeg. 

They and other health professionals tell us continuing this practise with COVID-19 is going to pose a serious risk. Emergency rooms are likely going to be stretched to the limit and the public has a very real concern about whether our system will be able to handle a potential surge in patients presenting to emergency rooms due to COVID-19. 

As we keep an eye on COVID-19, we must also continue to celebrate our community.

Congratulations to the volunteers and organizers of the Bear Clan Elmwood Patrol. Last month, my spouse, my staff and I were able to join in and get a first-hand look at an evening’s patrol. We walked over nine kilometres in our three-hour patrol of front streets and back lanes throughout the Chalmers and East Elmwood neighbourhoods.

Additionally, February was I Love to Read Month. A big thanks to Tracy Cosser, cxecutive director, and Stacy Conlon, preschool supervisor, and all the staff at Can You Imagine Preschool. It was a thrill to visit and share a good read with an attentive audience of preschoolers who really knew their pancakes.
