It’s been a very busy session at the legislature, and I’ve been hard at work delivering on our governments’ promises to you.

I was proud to vote in favour of Nello’s Law, a bill that ensures funding for a school nutrition program in Manitoba no matter who is in government. This bill was named after my late friend and colleague, Nello Altomare, the former MLA for Transcona, and it sets guidelines that ensure that each child who goes to school has a meal waiting for them. Being a lifelong educator, Nello understood that being hungry makes students have less focus on what’s important, learning. Taking this action ensures that no child will ever have to go to school hungry again in Manitoba. Our government firmly believes that every child matters and this bill stems from that belief.

In other important news for education, early childhood educators are going to be receiving the largest boost in wages in our province’s history. This is a stark change from the previous government, which refused to give ECEs the wages they deserve and I’m proud of the hard work done by Education Minister Tracy Schmidt, who led this change. Because of her dedicated effort, and with support from the federal government, our child-care workers will receive a much-needed raise. As we expand child-care spaces, it is vital that we ensure we can recruit and retain the ECEs to meet the needs of Manitoban families. In addition to this, our government is building a new school in Devonshire Park to support our growing community in northeast Winnipeg. When we invest in our kids we invest in the future of our community, it is vital that we continue to take initiative in improving education so our kids can have a good start and a bright future.

I want to congratulate all the graduates this year. Your achievements do not go unnoticed, and your hard work has paid off. I was proud to be at the River East Transcona School Division graduation powwow two weeks ago. It is always a great celebration of Indigenous graduates and a beautiful gathering for everyone in the division to attend. I will also be attending the graduation ceremony at Kildonan East Collegiate, here in Concordia. I wish every student good luck on their exams, and hope that high school was an enjoyable experience for everyone.

As always, I love hearing from you. My constituency office can be reached in the community at 106-1111 Munroe Ave., by email at matt.wiebe@yourmanitoba.ca or by phone at 204-654-1857.
