On April 15, the Manitoba NDP launched the province’s first home and business security rebate program. It’s a modest but important investment in our community’s public safety.
The $300 rebate is a significant opportunity for more residents and small businesses to enhance their security measures. This investment in your safety is a testament to our commitment to your well-being.
Upgrades eligible for rebates include security cameras, alarm systems, motion detectors, reinforced doors or windows, anti-graffiti film, anti-burglar paints that grease surfaces like poles, security gates, pull-down protection shutters and permanent security fencing.

Existing alarm systems with ongoing subscriptions or monthly fees are not eligible. The rebate covers only the equipment associated with the alarm.
Purchases made after Sept. 1, 2023, are eligible to receive the $300 rebate. The application system for the rebate will launch in June and applications will be reviewed on a fair and equitable first-come, first-served basis. We value your time and are committed to treating all applications with equal importance.
Cities like Chicago and Washington, D.C., and smaller Canadian cities like Orillia, Ontario, have already adopted similar rebate programs. Our team hopes to work with cities such as Winnipeg and other municipalities to build on our government’s rebates for residents and small businesses.
Bigger businesses already budget for safety and security. They don’t need the rebate, nor do they expect it. But that hasn’t stopped opposition PCs from arguing the rebate should be going primarily to these kinds of businesses. They should get on board and support a program directly benefiting their homeowners and small businesses.
Residents and smaller businesses need more help, and this program is an important step in making their homes and businesses safer. As this program gains momentum, I am confident that it will inspire your NDP government and your municipal officials to budget and increase supports for these types of measures in the future.
