Scott Fielding has spent most of his time working on Manitoba’s health care system as the Minister of Finance in the government of Brian Pallister. Now, he’s hoping his work will speak for itself, as he seeks re-election in Kirkfield Park.

Fielding said this election is about trust.

“We were left with a big mess from the previous NDP government. With health care spending, and a number of other policies, we’re trying to make a number of changes so we can be more effective and financially more prepared,” Fielding said. “Can you trust the former NDP government? Or can you trust our government, (which has) made a lot of progress?”

Fielding was previously a City of Winnipeg councillor, representing the St. James-Brooklands ward. He was elected to City Hall in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. Fielding was elected as MLA for Kirkfield Park in the 2016 election, beating out NDP incumbent Sharon Blady.

Fielding has served as the Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the Civil Service Commission and, before that, as Minister of Families for the current government. The government enacted a number of policies, including reducing the PST to seven per cent, changing several emergency room hospitals into urgent care centres, and adding an emergency room to Grace Hospital.

Fielding said if the PCs are re-elected, they will look at changing how the Manitoba school system is funded.

“Our party has committed to building 20 new schools across Manitoba, something that hasn’t been done in a very long time,” Fielding said. “We think that too much money is being spent at the school board and administrative level. We want to make sure we’re spending that money on our kids.”

The PCs have said they will commit $500 million towards 20 new schools, built over the course of 10 years. Seven of the schools are already being constructed.

Also running for Kirkfield Park is Kurt Morton (NDP), Ernie Nathaniel (MLP), and Dennis Bayomi (GPM).
