Kelvin High School will be getting $55,000 from the City of Winnipeg to fund the school’s new active living centre, and more may be coming.
On Jan. 13, Coun. John Orlikow (River Heights – Fort Garry) approved a community incentive grant in the amount of $50,000 to help pay for an active living centre to be built on campus.
The $1-million project will be an extension of a new gym facility that was announced by Premier Greg Selinger in April 2014.
Orlikow said the facility will be open to the public and will provide needed space for community programming.
“We know that in the River Heights area there is a real lack of senior programming space and so this would hopefully allow the community to be addressed through the new gym,” Orlikow said.
Coun. Cindy Gilroy (Daniel McIntyre) also awarded $5,000 to the school project saying she has a number of students in her ward that attend Kelvin.
Kelvin’s community incentive grant request was for $100,000 and they also submitted a request for a land dedication reserve (LDR) in the amount of $50,000. Winnipeg Public Service recommended the LDR be declined and Coun. Orlikow laid the matter over to the next City Centre Community Committee meeting.
Orlikow said $100,000 of city money has been committed to the project and will be dispersed appropriately.
According to documents submitted to the city, the gym space will be 7,392 square-feet with an ancillary space of 5,480 square-feet. The fundraising committee at Kelvin hopes to increase the square footage by 2,128 square-feet at a cost of $1,064,000.
