The Kelvin High School Parent Advisory Council is hoping the community will reach a little deeper into its pockets to support the new active living centre as construction on the facility continues.

Andrea Firth, the parent advisory council’s active living centre representative, said at least $50,000 more is needed to complete the project, which was estimated to cost about $1.4 million.

“It depends how many things go wrong, you see,” Firth said, adding that costs may rise about $60,000.

Firth said they’ve had to dip into a contingency fund to cover unexpected costs. In January, while crews were excavating and putting in piles, work hit a snag when workers discovered the school’s main power line was intertwined with the roots of an oak tree that needed to be removed. Cold weather also slowed down the project.

The Winnipeg School Division requires the additional funds by June, Firth said.

“Because of the design change there were additional costs related to that,” she added. “So we’ve been having to make up what went into the original architectural drawing… and things happen. They need to have the extra money there, so it will be covered.

“We’re quite hopeful that we will get it.”

Myles Poseluzney, site supervisor with general contractor Regent Construction, said work on the active living centre’s main structure is about a quarter way complete and will be done for the end of April. Once school’s out for the summer construction activities will ramp up inside, he added.

“The unexpected minus 40 weather has been a bit of a toll on everyone in trying to get to certain points of the contract. Now we’re past that hurdle and things are really starting to shape up,” he said.

Students can expect to use the new centre come September.

“We’re gung-ho to have the project complete for the beginning of school,” Poseluzney said. “In our eyes it’s going really good.”

Firth is hopeful the activity on the site will encourage people to continue to donate to the project. Following the governmental review of the project (which initially included a second gym) and uncertainty regarding funding which paused the work, Firth said the community was concerned about the status of the active living centre.

“We’re hopeful that people will realize that yes it really is happening,” she said.

“When we can walk in the door that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The parent advisory council is holding a plant sale through Glenlea Greenhouses until April 8. People are encouraged to order their bedding plants through Glenlea’s website (under fundraising). Plants will be delivered to the school May 9.

On April 12, the parent advisory council is hosting a dinner and talent show in the school gymnasium, featuring a pasta meal donated by De Nardi, Myer’s Delicatessen, Mona Lisa Ristorante, and DeLuca’s.

Entertainment will be provided by members of Kelvin’s Class Act program and tickets are $15 by calling the school at 204-474-1492.

Firth said the community can expect future appeals as the school looks to populate the centre with equipment, and one day, build the previously envisioned gym as an addition to the active living centre.
