Excitement is building with the announcement that the Sobeys Extra at 2860 Pembina Hwy. will open on Fri., Jan. 29.

Keri Scobie, communications manager for Sobeys Inc. Western Canada, said the new Fort Richmond grocery store will open its doors to the public at 9 a.m. following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Sobeys Extra will be the second of its kind in western Canada and is one of 10 across the country. Scobie said the company is ready to show what the store has to offer.

Danielle Da Silva - Sou'wester The Sobeys Extra on Pembina Highway will open to customers on Jan. 29.

“It’s always busy times, but we’re excited,” Scobie said. “These are always big events for us and we’re always really excited when we’re bringing new stores into our family.”

The Sobeys Extra will be the anchor tenant of the Fort Richmond Plaza. Construction began in spring 2015. The Safeway  store that previously stood on the site was closed in 2014.

The 58,000-square-foot supermarket has been hailed as a much-needed retail addition to the neighbourhood and has been a source of speculation for many in the community.

South Winnipeg-St. Norbert city councillor Janice Lukes said she has fielded countless calls inquiring about the site.

“I’m very pleased Sobeys will be providing fresh healthy food to the community and offering so many extras in the new store,” Lukes said in an email. “The economic spinoff and great job opportunities are a very welcome addition to South Winnipeg! I think I’ve had almost as many inquiries as to when Sobeys is opening, as I’ve had requests to fill potholes!”

Managed by Paul Korpesho, the store will employ over 100 people and provide “extra” services not available at other locations, Scobie said.

“The stores are bigger and we’ve got different experts in our store. We have an in-store chef, we have well-being counsellors, we’ve got cheese ambassadors, these people that really want to make the customer experience something great,” Scobie explained.

“Our whole philosophy as a company about providing better affordable food solutions for our customers,” she said. “We really want to change the shopping experience for our customers so that starts right with our staff.”

The store will also offer a community room with cooking classes, a sushi and noodle bar, and pet boutique, Scobie said.

The first 500 people in line on Jan. 29 will receive a Sobeys gift card and during the grand opening weekend Scobie said there will be lots of food sampling including exotic fruit, fresh baked goods, specialty cheeses and meats from the deli.

Also on the horizon for south Winnipeg is a Save-On-Foods grocery store going into Bridgwater Forest and set to open in the fall.
