Kelvin Active Living Centre holding final fundraising push
The parent advisory council at Kelvin High School is hosting a “shovel in the ground” social to raise the last bit of funds needed for the new active living centre.
According to vice-principal Joyce Wong, the school has raised over $1 million and needs $150,000 more. The social will be on May 14 at Kelvin (155 Kingsway) and will go from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets to the event are $25 and are available through the school office by calling 204-474-1492.
A number of local businesses have also provided donations for silent auction, Wong said.
Officials are hoping to start construction in August and drawings will be approved in the coming weeks before the project goes out to tender.
Call to lock doors in River Heights following break in
The River Heights based Smashed Window Club is advising property owners to keep their garages and homes locked following a string of break ins.
Jon Waldman, a spokesperson for the citizen group, said Winnipeg Police noted a trend that targeted properties have been unlocked. Thieves will try handles to see if they’re unlocked and proceed to enter the building.
“We’re asking people to lock their doors as part of their security practices,” Waldman said.
Police also made two arrests last week related to an attempted home break in. One youth and one adult were arrested after a community member alerted police to the suspicious activity.
Waldman said police are reporting an overall drop in crime compared to this time last year, due to the efforts of the community.
