Little Sister Coffee Maker has branched out from Osborne Village to launch a second shop in the South Osborne area.
The new location at 539 Osborne St. opened at the end of October following the success of the original venue at 470 River Ave., which opened more than five years ago.
Vanessa Stachiw owns Little Sister Coffee Maker as well as its roasting company Dogwood Coffee, located in the Exchange District. She is pleased to be offering additional items along with coffee at the new shop.
“Our shop in Osborne Village is just strictly coffee and pastries and things like that,” she said.
“Here in South Osborne, we have beer and wine and a snack menu as well.”
The homegrown company places a strong emphasis on quality in every aspect of the business.
“We’re known for the quality of our coffee and the quality of the service that we provide. Our coffee is known as specialty coffee. It’s a higher grade than grocery store coffee or what many other coffee shops use,” said Stachiw, who is a little sister herself with three older siblings.
“We put a lot of emphasis on the coffees that we source and the producers that we work with. We try to build relationships, and we use a relationship-based sourcing method. For example, in the spring I was in Costa Rica visiting our producers and choosing our coffees.”
For Stachiw, it’s important to maintain this ethical approach to operating her businesses.
“It’s based on ethics as well as quality. We’re really proud of the coffee that we serve — and that pride extends to everything we do. It’s nice that we’re able to be more involved in the supply chain than other coffee shops are,” she said.
“We take pride in being involved in the sourcing, the roasting and the service capacity as well. The quality extends the whole way down, even to our equipment and the way we train our staff. It’s so important to us.”
The entrepreneur is energized by the new South Osborne venture.
“Things have been going well. An opportunity came around and it seemed like a great fit, so I just went for it,” said Stachiw, who lives in Osborne Village.
“I wouldn’t have opened up a second location just anywhere. South Osborne is a great spot and there is not a lot there in terms of coffee. There are other businesses in the neighbourhood that I really enjoy, so I was keen to be a part of it.”
Little Sister Coffee Maker is open seven days a week at both of its locations.
The new South Osborne location is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.
