A third-generation family-run meat market grew from humble beginnings to become a
Winnipeg mainstay.
Celebrating 74 years in business, Cantor’s Meats continues to provide quality products that are a cut above the rest.
Ed Cantor grew up working in the store that his grandpa, Edward, started more than seven decades ago after he moved to Canada from Poland.
“He needed to make money, so he started selling chickens from his house. They delivered chickens from door to door. They started to grow their business by selling a little bit of this and a little bit of that to make money. They used their living room as a partial store,” Cantor said.
“He died three years after that. My father and my uncle had to take over and run their own business out of the house because they needed the money. They continued with the chickens, and they delivered milk and eggs on their bicycles. Their mother ran the grocery store with them out of their home.”
The business continued to grow, and eventually they moved to a bigger home with a storefront on Gallagher Avenue. Over the years, they built four additions to create more space for their growing customer base.
About five years ago, they knocked the store down and rebuilt a bigger version at 1445 Logan St. They transformed the previous location into a parking lot for the current shop.
The key to their continuity is quality, which has remained consistent from the start.
“Our meat is what brings people in. It’s the old-school style where we take the animal down from scratch and we bring in hinds of beef every day. We butcher it all here ourselves,” Cantor said.
