More child care for north Winnipeg

Reliable child care is crucial for families — which is why, more than at any other time in Manitoba history, this provincial government has been improving affordable child care options.

But there is still more to be done.

The Family Choices: Manitoba’s Plan to Expand Early Learning and Child Care will add over 5,000 new and newly funded child care spaces and invest $25 million to build at least 20 new or expanded child care centres in schools over the next five years. This plan will also support higher wages for the dedicated workers who are on the front lines of child care.

In addition to several new or expanded centres opened in the North End recently, three new child care facilities will be opening in West and Old Kildonan in partnership with the Seven Oaks School Division.

The Andrews Early Learning Centre will open its doors this fall at 801 Andrews St. near Victory School — the first new stand-alone child care centre in the constituency of St. Johns since the 1970s. Operated by the Sunny Mountain Day Care, it will have 74 new spaces for infants and preschoolers. The remarkable new building will also boast a private green space for the children to enjoy.

We can also look forward to some exciting improvements in Amber Trails and Riverbend. The much-anticipated Amber Trails School, opening in January 2015, will offer up to 74 new infant and preschool spaces and an additional 30 school-age child care spaces operated by Maples Day Care.       

This spring, we also announced a brand-new school for families in Riverbend. It will alleviate overcrowding in this growing community and provide up to 66 new infant and preschool spaces operated by Sugar-N-Spice Kiddie Haven.

Since 1999, we have invested in more than 13,000 new spaces and we have committed funding for more than 100 new or expanded child care centres province-wide.  Since 2008 alone, 42 new child care centres have been built in Manitoba. These three new child care facilities will mean over 200 new child care spaces for our community in the future. This is great news for north Winnipeg, which in turn, is good news for all of us.
