I’ve always said spending time with students, either speaking in classrooms or visiting with them at the Legislative Building, is one of my favourite parts of being an MLA. Young people are the future of our province and when we can better their lives, we know we are doing something right. So when great initiatives are happening in schools in my area I am thrilled that my constituents are able to take advantage of these great new opportunities.

There have been two excellent announcements at Garden City Collegiate in the last few months that will help students jump start their futures. High school should be a launch pad, not a finish line. That’s why our government is investing in Garden City Collegiate to transform its shops facilities into a state-of-the-art shops building trades program. This will include a 7,000-square-foot addition to the school and will allow students to train on the most up-to-date technology and learn lifelong valuable skills.

With the newly renovated technical vocational space, Garden City Collegiate will soon have the capacity to graduate 60 to 75 Level 1 apprentices every year.  I am excited that even more students will get to explore great job opportunities before they even leave high school. With the growing demand for skilled workers, students will be able to gain skills that employers value.

The second new initiative at Garden City Collegiate is another example of our government giving students a chance to get ahead. Garden City Collegiate is expanding their post-secondary course offerings so that more students can have access to post-secondary level courses while still in high school. Students will have the chance to take tuition-free, post-secondary credit courses, which will allow them to find their direction and save both money and time when they continue their education after high school.

I believe these new programs are great opportunities for students. I hope that these opportunities will encourage more students to consider post-secondary education and create a better future for them in our province.
