When I chat with my neighbours here in The Maples, safe and affordable childcare is always one of their biggest concerns.
As the Minister of Community Development, I know the value in government programs which support communities and local organizations.
Earlier this year, Amber Trails School received $15,000 from the province to build Maples Day Care on-site with plenty of outdoor and indoor space to encourage young kids to explore and be active.
Maples Day Care is part of our successful Community Places Program. The program provides funding for non-profit organizations to help build amenities like outdoor rinks and wheelchair accessible washrooms, expansions for sports fields, and structural replacements like roofs and floors. It targets projects which will encourage sustainable recreation and inspire Manitobans to live healthy lifestyles.
A few weeks ago I celebrated the launch of the program’s 30th year at Maples Day Care, joined by daycare director Susan Madzik, her staff and children; school principal Lorelei Bunkowsky; and Greg McFarlane from Seven Oaks School’s board of trustees. This year, the program will provide $3.5 million to over 200 organizations.
Programs like Community Places demonstrate that our government wants to protect Maples families and takes their quality of life seriously. Establishing high-quality affordable childcare has always been a priority for us; since we formed government we have created 14,000 childcare spaces and built 100 new facilities.
The Conservatives’ plans to recklessly cut childcare funding would put our economy in danger, and make life less affordable for our families.
