This annual event is organized by the members of the Seven Oaks Employees Association.

The official Independence Day of The Philippines is June 12. The country gained its independence from Spain in 1898, after more than 300 years of colonization.

“The Philippine Heritage and Independence Day Celebrations are evidence that we value multiculturalism. It’s a great time of the year when we can showcase our cultures and traditions through cultural activities and performances,” said event organizer Dr. Porfiria Pedrina.

Filipino immigration to Manitoba begun as far back as the early 1950s and Winnipeg now boasts one of the largest Filipino communities in Canada, with over 65,000 Filipino residents.

The Maples/Amber Trails district is described at times described as ‘Little Philippines.’

Mandalay and Manila streets and Dr. Jose Rizal Way are area streets named to honour Filipino places and the country’s founder.  Manila, the capital city of The Philippines, is a sister city of Winnipeg.

The vibrant, flourishing Filipino community contributes to every area of the local economy and the cultural landscape. Three members of the Manitoba Legislature and a long serving Winnipeg city councillor are members of the Filipino community.
