Whether they’re living on their own or in an assisted-living facility, today’s seniors are able to participate in many activities offered in the community.
Take the case of Sophie Shinewald. It’s easy to forget that she’s 104. The petite, well-spoken golden ager loves to play bridge at the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre at Syd Glow Place (1588 Main St.). A former teacher, Shinewald audited Jim Carr’s classes at the University of Winnipeg during her 80s and 90s “just for fun.”
Sophie has been a faithful member and volunteer for the non-profit group since it opened its doors 30 years ago. She answered the phones twice weekly and until recently helped out wherever she could.
“You meet a lot of people. It’s my home away from home,” she said.
Program director Danielle Tobacznik said the centre offers physical and mental stimulation for an average of 60 people every Wednesday and throughout the week. Members enjoy lunches, exercises, entertainment and outings. Future trips include visiting Larters at St. Andrews Golf Club to see the flowers, ice cream at Skinner’s in Lockport and seeing Shakespeare in Love at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.
Joyce Anderson, 85 lives at River Ridge Assisted Living Residence on Ridgecrest Avenue, a block east of Main Street in a palatial looking building geared to the comfort of its residents. The professional artist teaches art classes at the home and to 20 students at the Fort Rouge Community Club. Her portraits and paintings can be seen displayed on the walls of the River Ridge dining room. The tall, pretty lady with a generous smile very much enjoys living there.
“I’ve made some terrific friends here,” she said.
The Amber Meadow retirement home (320 Pipeline Rd.) offers an assortment of programs and outdoor activities.
The Fred Douglas Lodge (1270 Burrows Ave.) offers adult daycare programs Monday to Friday. This includes recreation activities, a hot meal, snacks and socialization with others as well as interaction with staff.
