Fitness program for Tyndall Park seniors
Tyndall Park Community Centre offers one-hour exercises from Monday to Friday

Seniors at Tyndall Park can enjoy the benefits of an active life close to their homes.
On Sept. 11, seniors gathered at 9:30 a.m. for the first line dancing offered by the Exercise 55+ Program at Tyndall Park Community Centre (2255 King Edward St.), organized by area resident Joseph Reynante. The new program will run from September to June, Monday to Friday, for one hour at 9:30 a.m. with a different activity each day. They’ll have line dancing, zumba, strength and stretch class and yoga for only $15 per month.
“It’s really important for us seniors to stay active,” Reynante said. “We tried to bring it here to Tyndall Park, and I hope this lasts for some years, not just for me, but for everybody.”
“We had been going all the way to Kildonan Place because we heard about this free exercise day, but it was only (one day). There’s some at The Forks, and it’s free, but first come, first served, and it’s so far from our place, especially in winter time.”
Many Tyndall Park seniors joined in the Garden City Community Centre 55-plus Exercise Program last September. However, due to high demand — GCCC currently has more than 200 seniors enrolled in various activities — Old Kildonan residents were given preference when it came to time slots, and GCCC could not guarantee space for residents from other areas anymore.
With the help of Point Douglas councillor Mike Pagtakhan, who assisted in finding a home for this new exercise program for seniors, Reynante and his community have a place close to home where they can maintain their healthy lifestyle. Pagtakhan worked with David DeSousa, operations manager at TPCC and the City administration in locating a room for the seniors to do their exercises and were able to secure the hall at Tyndall Park Community School.
“Our senior’s population is growing within the city of Winnipeg, and it’s important that we maintain healthy life style,” Pagtakhan said. “It’s good to see the seniors come out and living healthy and longer lives. That’s what this is all about.”
Reynante said he’s excited to see this program grow. Because of limited space, they only have 35 spots that have all been taken, but he is expecting they can open a few more in the future. To learn more about the TPCC 55-plus Exercise Program, contact the community centre at 204-632-4916.
