St. John’s hydro substation decommissioned

The Manitoba Hydro station located on 606 Charles St. was de-energized and will be salvaged and transformed into a green space for area residents.

The Charles Station was near capacity and at the end of its useful life. With the addition of Burrows Station in 2013 and the associated conversion of 4 kV feeders to 12 kV, Manitoba Hydro has deactivated Charles Station.

Environmental testing and electrical apparatus removal has been completed and the removal of above-grade structures and infrastructure, including concrete foundations is scheduled to happen before the spring. Removal of concrete foundations and below-grade infrastructure will take place during spring. Landscaping of the green space will happen throughout summer and fall of 2018.
