The Red River College Rebels are champions of the Manitoba College Athletic Conference after defeating the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers 88-75 in the 2018 MCAC men’s basketball championship game on Feb. 10.
Head coach Scott Kirkpatrick explained that the Rebels didn’t have a solid roster throughout the season. Because team members are student-athletes, they juggle to co-ordinate school, sports, and work.
“There are times during the season where we have a hard time getting everybody to practice, or we are shorthanded a few athletes on a trip because maybe they got an exam or a test and they can’t get out,” he explained. “For the most part, our guys handled the challenges pretty well. We just had some times where we were sort of battling, getting everybody together.”
