People are going to rock and roll with a night of music at Maples Collegiate.
Ryan Spence, a Grade 9 student at Maples Met is organizing Rock the Commons, a concert to raise funds for the Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre in partnership with School of Rock. Four bands from the School of Rock and the Seven Oaks School Division will be performing.
Spence said he wanted to support SOPAC because the students will finally have a place of their own to showcase their talents.
“It’s going to be a great space because students don’t usually have a good venue to perform and I think all students should be able to show off their talents,” he said.
The 14-year-old student came up with the idea for the concert while interning at the School of Rock. He said many students are into the performing arts and there was a need to help the centre, which will soon open in the Garden City area.
“Most of the kids have to do their band or choir performances on tables, and it’s crowded, and it’s not a fun time, but then at the SOPAC, it’s going to be a theatre, and it’s going to have state-of-the-art stages, chairs, lighting, and equipment,” he continued.
Spence has been organizing the event since the beginning of April, and it’s hoping people join them in support of SOPAC. In addition to the performances, there will also be raffle tickets and people can also make donations at www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/rock-the-commons
“Everybody needs to help to make this possible,” Spence, who will be playing the saxophone at the event, said. “It’s great because lots of people like to see the youth helping out and making a difference in the community as opposed to playing video games.”
The event takes place on Fri., June 22 at Maples Collegiate (1330 Jefferson Ave.) from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets for the event are $10 and are available at the School of Rock located at 657 Corydon Ave. and Maples Met.
