I truly believe that Winnipeg has the best summers in Canada.
From our countless festivals to the dependable summer heat, there is a lot to love about the upcoming months in our city. Closer to home, summer is also the perfect time to enjoy some sunshine in your backyard and take some time to stop and smell the many flowers growing around our beautiful neighbourhood. Garden City lives up to its name every year, with so many residents taking the time to plant flowers and putter in their gardens.
If you are worried about needing a green thumb, fear not. You do not have to be a gardening guru or master griller to enjoy summer in our city to its fullest. Here are a few ways to welcome summer to your home:
• Start from the street: Look at your house from the front curb. Does it need some colour? If so, add a colourful planter to your front steps or walkway. Adding a few pops of colour with flowers can make a big impact. One of the easiest and nicest flowers for our climate is the classic geranium. It adapts well to any garden and provides colour all summer till frost.
• Patio time: What could be better than a day spent soaking up the sun on your patio or deck? From flowers to fountains, there are many ways to create your own backyard paradise. If you are looking for something unique, impress your guests by adding a Mediterranean influence with your very own lemon or lime shrub. Available at select local garden centres, these small shrubs can be brought in the house over the winter and will continue to produce fruit for years to come.
• Enjoy it: One of the things a lot of people forget to do in their own yard is use it! As simple as that sounds, summer is not here forever so make the most of time spent outside. Try something different, such as sipping your morning coffee on the patio or enjoy an evening ice cream on the front porch.
I hope that everyone’s summer is off to a fantastic start. Congratulations to all the 2018 graduates, and I am looking forward to another wonderful summer here in gorgeous Garden City!
