Young basketball player’s star is on the rise

Mekhi Lisan of Maples Collegiate’s Class of 2023, is a young, talented basketball player, who is being scouted and recruited by several top North American prep schools and AAU teams. At just 14, the five-foot-eight guard is considered a top basketball prospect.
Mekhi began playing basketball at just two years old and has been the top player in his age division since he was four. He has led his Junior Bisons and middle school teams in development to championships in Winnipeg and United States.
This past season, Mekhi guided his Grade 8 Amber Trails Community School team to its first provincial championship and an undefeated record of 26-0. He was also one of the youngest players on the 15U provincial team, which he led in scoring.
Mekhi is a strong, humble player and a quick learner. His natural abilities are supported by his dedicated parents, Alexzandra Dela Cruz and Michael Lisan, and he embraces an intense coaching and training regime.
In the past two years, Mekhi has also played on a Toronto-based team called CIA Bounce that takes part Amateur Athletics Union (AAU) competition in the U.S.
“We have been sacrificing to have him travel to participate with CIA Bounce”, said Alexzandra, Mekhi’s mother.
Mekhi most recently shone at a recent basketball camp in Huntsville, Ala., where he was approached by five of the top AAU teams in the United States.
“It was tremendous pride for us, to have the only Canadian, only Asian player that was at this invite-only camp in Alabama,” said his parents.
According to his parents, one trainer and scout from Atlanta, Ga., said “Mekhi is skilled… has NCAA talent.”
Mekhi recently completed middle school with a 93 per cent average. With support from his family, his goal is to play Division 1 NCAA basketball, to strive for the NBA and to give back to Winnipeg’s basketball community.
