Garden City is fortunate to have many beautiful homes and our neighbourhood contains some of the finest examples of mid-century modern architecture in Winnipeg. The architects and developers wanted to ensure families could grow and enjoy an urban environment of the finest standards for generations to come.
Nestled amongst the trees of Forest Park Drive, one iconic bungalow designed by famed, Winnipeg-born architect Isadore Coop has been admired by many Garden City residents since it was built in 1965.
The home is commonly referred to as the Raber House, named for the family behind Winnipeg’s Raber Glove Company. In 2015, the house was sold to the Castillo family, who have thoughtfully preserved and maintained the home’s design and unique character.
Before purchasing the Raber House, the new owners were originally planning on designing and building a custom home. But after walking into the storied Forest Park Drive residence, they instantly fell in love with the iconic and striking mid-century design. The family says the home contains all the functionality, conveniences and thoughtful touches they could have ever wanted.
The spacious 1,900-square-foot home features a bright and clean interior, with rich wood panelling amongst the living spaces. Built-in credenzas and practical wall cabinetry give the house a warm yet modern, feel. The original flooring and lighting work together to give the house a timeless elegance unmatched by anything built today. The Castillo family has done an incredible job breathing new life and energy into such a historic space.
The new owners have spent considerable time and effort furnishing the space with pieces that reflect the home’s history and pay homage to the original design. The furniture within is sleek but also warm and comfortable, maintaining the clean mid-century-modern look found throughout the home while creating a comfortable space perfect for their family.
Surprisingly, almost no changes have been made since the house was built. It remains in pristine condition and the family has no renovations or alternations planned. We are fortunate that many of the unique mid-century designs and features of Garden City homes have been preserved; they are sought after and treasured by a new generation of homeowners.
Excellent work Castillo family! Welcome to the neighbourhood!
