Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Peg City Car Co-op is temporarily postponing a proposed expansion to the St. John’s/Luxton area in early April. The Co-op will be updating vehicle release dates in the next four weeks.

The car-sharing service, which has more than 40 vehicles in its fleet across Winnipeg, will make its furthest trek north by adding three new car locations: at Redwood Avenue and Main Street; at Olympic Towers (480 Charles St.); and behind Pollock’s Hardware Co-op located at 1407 Main St.

“People have signed up in that area to use vehicles in the Exchange. These are people who we call early adopters. They’re clearly keen enough to use the service by taking a bus first to get to one of our cars in the Exchange District, so it tells us that it’s somewhat promising,” Philip Mikulec, operations manager, said.

The co-operative launched in 2011 with only three cars. Last fall it announced an expansion that would see its network of vehicles grow by roughly 50 per cent.

The way the program works is individuals can book a car online and pick it up at a designated location, for a cost.

With the anticipated arrival of Uber in Winnipeg this spring, Mikulec could not say whether the ride-hailing service will impact usage and membership at Peg City Car Co-op.

So far, smaller businesses such as TappCar, which came to Winnipeg in 2018, have not been an issue, Mikulec added.

“Those smaller players haven’t affected our membership growth and our vehicle usage, but Uber’s a little bit of a different story. There are some indicators in other cities that they can cannibalize car-sharing usage,” he said.

“We have to wait and see.”
