Maples Collegiate unveils 40th-anniversary project
Maples Collegiate held a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 30 to open the serenity courtyard outdoor classroom, a project that honours the school’s 40th anniversary.
More than 20 staff volunteered and contributed over 850 hours of labour. Perennial plants were both purchased and donated; some have been planted to reflect the medicine wheel. A decorative bridge and woodwork were constructed by teachers Christopher Loewen and Nicholas Wiebe. Secretary Olga Strashok painted a mural, which will be installed in the area.
Maples Met School teacher recognized with provincial award
Emma Gehrs-Whyte, a Grade 10 advisor at Maples Met School, has been named the Outstanding New Teacher in the province, as part of Manitoba’s Excellence in Education Awards.
In an Instagram post congratulating Gehrs-Whyte, the school said, “She is empathetic, driven, generous, and has a diverse set of skills and life experiences.”
The award is given to one teacher annually.
“These new teachers demonstrate great enthusiasm and professional skills that foster a love of learning in students,” the province’s website states.
Powers Park Plaza market opens for season
The farmers’ market at Powers Park Plaza, located at Selkirk Avenue and Powers Street, opened for the season on July 10.
The market will run on Fridays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., until Sept. 4.
Section of Redwood Avenue temporarily closed
The eastbound and westbound lanes of Redwood Avenue, between Charles Street and Main Street, will be closed from July 11 to 7 p.m. on Tues., July 28, due to sewer maintenance, according to a news release issued by the City of Winnipeg.
