Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America and the game is thriving in Winnipeg.

Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, playing pickleball allows you to maintain social distancing and also keep fit.

The sport is popular with adults, and the Maples Community Centre (434 Adsum Dr.) is one of several venues for pickleball in north Winnipeg.

Invented in 1965, the game is a fun combination of tennis, ping pong and badminton. The paddle and ball used are simply oversized ping pong racquets and balls and the game is played on a badminton court with a lowered net, and the rules are similar to those of badminton.

Singles and doubles matches can be played. Some of the reasons pickleball is popular are that it’s easy to learn and play and it’s easy on the body. It usually takes just a few minutes of playing the game to become comfortable with the sport. In fact, it is considered the easiest racquet sport to learn.

Paramjit Singh is the chairman and organizer of Maples Community Centre’s pickleball program. The game is played on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9 and 11 a.m.

“The first time I tried pickleball, I was hooked on the game,” Paramjit said. “It’s an excellent, healthy activity.”
