Fifth Restaurants for Change continues to support NorWest

On Oct. 17, more than 75 restaurants in 19 Canadian cities will donate proceeds from their dinner sales to support food programs in various communities across the country that bring people together to grow, cook, share and advocate for healthy food for all.

In Winnipeg, chef Ben Krammer will be hosting a pop-up restaurant at NorWest Community Food Centre (103-61 Tyndall Ave.). Chew Restaurant (532 Waterloo St.) and Forth (171 McDermot Ave.) are also participating.
Funds raised at the event in Winnipeg will support NorWest Community Food Centre and Community Food Centres Canada.
U of W honours faculty member who helped create Healing Forest
On Fri., Oct. 12 Dr. Lee Anne Block will receive the Campus Sustainability Recognition Award at the University of Winnipeg 2018 Autumn Convocation, along with Dr. Jino Distasio who will be given the Clarence Atchison Award for Excellence in Community Service.
Block helped establish the Healing Forest in St. John’s Park, a living memorial to Indigenous children and families lost to or affected by the residential school system. This land will be a gathering place for families and communities and a place for healing, contemplation, and land-based learning. It is meant to help advance the goals of reconciliation and understanding about the need to protect the environment, as well as to promote cultural sustainability. Block is also active in several other sustainability initiatives, including the Langside Learning Garden, a partnership with Spence Neighbourhood Association.
She is described as a passionate educator and researcher who has inspired others in the core values of sustainability through education — particularly cultural sustainability.
Website provides information on Manitoba municipalities’ election
The Association of Manitoba Municipalities has officially launched its 2018 Municipal Elections website designed by Blueshift Innovations.
MBvotes.ca compiles election information from all of Manitoba’s 137 incorporated municipalities. Website visitors are also able to view candidates vying for elected municipal positions through an interactive map of Manitoba. The information on the website is updated daily.
In addition to information about candidates, the public and media will be able to monitor election results as they are voluntarily reported by municipalities across Manitoba on election day.
“The AMM is very excited and pleased to host this website on behalf of our members,” said Joe Masi, AMM executive director. “We encourage all Manitobans to follow the results of the 2018 Municipal Elections via MBvotes.ca through their desktop, smartphone or tablet.”
The 2018 general municipal elections will be held on Wed., Oct. 24.
