It’s been a slow start to the season for the North Winnipeg Satelites, said assistant general manager Cliff Malzensky. At press time, the team was sitting in fifth and last place in the Capital Region Junior Hockey League, which was established last year.

At press time the Satelites had five losses under their belt, opposite of the Selkirk Fishermen who were in first place with four victories.

The Fishermen won the first league title in the 2018-2019 season.

“The Selkirk Fishermen are always strong. They have a strong team,” Malzensky said.

Among the Satelites roster, only eight or nine are returning players.

“We rely on our veterans a lot,” he said. “They keep the guys up when we’re down.”

Since most of  the players are rookies, he said practices have focused on enhancing basic skills such as taking advantage during power plays.

“Usually what we work on, like with a lot of new rookies, it’s all learning the new systems. They come from high school and triple A. Systems change from team to team, league to league, so there’s learning that,” he said.

“It’s been pretty much hard work and not scoring enough goals.”

The Satelites’ next home game will be against the Arborg Ice Dawgs at Billy Mosienko Arena (709 Keewatin St.) at 8 p.m. on Tues., Nov. 19.
