Mintu Sandhu set down roots in The Maples after immigrating to Canada from India in 1989 and has never left.

Now, 30 years later, the Maples Collegiate grad is running as the NDP MLA candidate for The Maples. Sandhu is the general manager of Unicity Taxi and has worked to help modernize transportation systems in Manitoba and create jobs during his four-year term with the Manitoba Infrastructure’s Motor Transport Board.

Sandhu said “the health care crisis Pallister has put us in,” is one of his motivations to get involved with politics. His elderly parents have made use of Seven Oaks General Hospital ER, closed on July 22, and he said “(Pallister’s) reckless decisions have hurt many families in Manitoba.”

“That’s what I’ve been hearing the most from residents. I want to reopen the Seven Oaks ER. I’m running to help people feel at home when they go to Seven Oaks Hospital,” said the candidate, adding education is also another topic he wants to tackle if elected. “We are not building schools to the right size. We are not thinking into the future and how many kids are going to need the school.”

He also mentioned people are worried about plans of privatizing Manitoba Hydro and Manitoba Public Insurance. Throughout his involvement with transportation, Sandhu gained experience dealing with government officials at provincial and municipal levels.

Aside from being busy campaigning, Sandhu also enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids. He has been a basketball coach at the Maples Community Centre and a fundraising volunteer for Immaculate Heart of Mary School. He is also active in his culture, and volunteers at the Gurdwara Kalgidhar Darbar temple. He also speaks three languages: English, Punjabi, and Hindi.

Sandhu said he is encouraging people to go out and exercise their right to vote.

“This is a very important election. I want to make sure people go out there and vote. It’s really important.”

Also running in The Maples are Deep Brar (MLP), Kiran Gill (GPM) and Aman Sandhu (PC). Brar, Gill and Sandhu did not respond to requests for interviews by press time.
