Nordic walking brings relief

The Garden City Community Centre 55-plus program usually meets inside the Garden City Community Centre to socialize and stay active, but the COVID-19 pandemic has put that on hold.

The seniors group has pivoted to try Nordic walking at the Garden City Collegiate track.

Coun. Devi Sharma (Old Kildonan) provided the group with $1,000 through a Winnipeg Wellness grant to purchase walking poles. Nordic walking helps participants improve strength, balance and fitness.

“None of the members in the group had used walking poles before so it’s great they are trying a new way of being physically active while the community centre is currently shut down,” Sharma said in a press release.

“These poles are great and (help) to take the pressure off of my knees,” said Maples resident Debbie Werboweski.
