January is a time to reflect on the year ahead, set new goals and make positive changes in your daily routine.

As a neighbourhood, January is also an exciting time to look at the year ahead and start planning for our community events. One of the most popular and talked-about events of 2019 was the inaugural Garden City community-wide garage sale. There were over 60 garage sales participating through our neighbourhood and feedback from residents and treasure hunters alike was resoundingly positive. Last year’s event was so much fun we are doing it again! Mark your calendars and join your neighbours on Sat., June 6 for the second annual Garden City Neighbourhood Garage Sale.

Residents said they had a great time buying and selling and requested we make it an annual event. Having one designated garage sale date brings many more shoppers to the area and creates a wonderful buzz throughout the community. The first Saturday of June works well, as summer holidays have not yet begun and few other neighbourhood garage sales take place that weekend.

These upcoming winter months are the perfect time to go through your spare rooms, closets and basements. Decluttering is known to be therapeutic. Cleaner, more organized spaces are also better for our mental health. Garage sales are an excellent way to give unused or unwanted items a new lease on life. This reduces your environmental impact, as some national-chain thrift stores do not resell many items that get donated. Garage sales also keep quality things out of the landfill and make for a fun day of selling!

I am looking forward to seeing even more residents and garage sales join this fun (and now annual!) event. If you have ideas for improving this year’s community garage sale or are interested in volunteering on the committee, please connect with me at the email address below. We are always looking for fresh ideas.

You can search for our Garden City Residents’ Association group on Facebook for news and updates. I will also be writing another column in the springtime to update residents not on social media.

Happy New Year, Garden City! And good luck with organizing and decluttering!
