RIP Roddy: By now, most people know pro wrestling star Rowdy Roddy Piper died Friday of cardiac arrest. He was raised in Winnipeg and made his wrestling debut here. But Piper’s acting career extended beyond the ring, as Free Press entertainment reporter Randall King recounts today. In 1988, Piper starred in the John Carpenter-directed cult movie They Live. And in 2008, he played a paraplegic widower in the film Clear Lake, which was shot around Gimli. READ MORE

On Aug. 4, 1985: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that 2,000 black mourners in South Africa defied a new government ban on political funerals to bury 11 victims of civil unrest as martyrs. Flin Flon and the RCMP celebrated 50 years of the Mounties’ presence there; the community was the first municipality in Canada to use the RCMP as its local police force. Wet weather eased fears of forest fires. The Queen Mother Elizabeth celebrated her 85th birthday. Guitarist Lenny Breau’s 1984 murder remained unsolved.
