Arniel looks for answers after Jets lifeless loss in Boston to start road trip

Mike McIntyre 6 minute read Yesterday at 10:31 PM CDT

BOSTON — The city that famously gave us a fictional bar where everybody knew your name and everyone’s troubles were all the same may have just served last call on the Winnipeg Jets’ season.

An ugly 6-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Thursday night at TD Garden sure felt like closing time on their playoff hopes.

“At the end of the day, we didn’t execute but then our compete level dropped,” said Jets head coach Scott Arniel, adding yet another biting, post-game soundbite to a year filled with far too many of them.

“As soon as you drop your compete level against a team like that, that’s the result that you’re going to get.”

The punches from the Dakota Lancers came in bunches.

By the time the bell rang at the end of Thursday night’s heavyweight bout, it was the Lancers left standing after a heated 102-91 decision in the AAAA boys’ provincial basketball semifinals at Investor’s Group Athletic Centre.

The Lancers advance to the provincial championship for the second year in a row and will face the Maples Marauders back at IGAC on Monday (8 p.m.).

“It’s all about our defence, not giving up,” said forward Jed Godfrey-Ehichoya, who scored 17 points and added seven rebounds. “Coach told us ‘never give in.’ If they score, get back on defence, get the ball back, score back. It’s all about perseverance.”

Mellow Rom go-to player for Lancers

Unassuming. Relaxed. Reserved.

Those aren’t characteristics used to describe every star athlete, but they’re qualities that have helped shape Daniel Rom, the top-ranked high school varsity boys basketball player in the province.

You wouldn’t be the first to be surprised by Rom. The 6-5 guard’s mellow demeanour off the court might leave some questioning if they’re watching the same player when his elite competitive nature takes over on it.

“I’ve heard that from a couple of people where my demeanour is very, I don’t know, ‘relaxed.’ When I’m on the court, I don’t really pay attention to it,” said Rom, who is in Grade 11.

Canada’s Kerri Einarson reaches world curling championship playoffs despite loss

CALGARY - Canada suffered a second extra-end loss in the world women's curling championship, but nevertheless qualified for playoffs.

Kerri Einarson's Manitoba foursome dropped a 10-6 decision in an extra end to Norway on Thursday evening.

A China or Turkey loss would still have catapulted the Canadians into playoffs and both scenarios occurred in the evening draw.

Switzerland at 9-1, Canada and Japan at 8-2 and Sweden at 8-3 were the first four teams in the playoff door with the remaining two berths still on the table Friday.

McEwen ‘Caught off guard’ by dismissal

Mike McEwen believes his former team made a mistake by cutting him loose.

It was also a move he didn’t see coming.

The 45-year-old Winnipegger was informed last week by his Saskatoon-based teammates — Colton Flasch, Kevin Marsh and Dan Marsh — that they were replacing him with 27-year-old Tyler Tardi of Langley, B.C.

“Yeah, I’m not going to sugarcoat it: I was caught off guard,” McEwen told the Free Press.

CALGARY - Her teammates say she's either the life of the party or fast asleep.

Karlee Burgess has been a workhorse on the broom given the volume of draws she's dragged into the rings at the women's world curling championship in Calgary.

Canada's lead also brought enthusiastic rookie energy to her world championship debut, which her teammates have fed upon.

"She sweeps hard and keeps us laughing out there," said Canada's second Shannon Birchard.

TORONTO - Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews underwent successful knee surgery on Thursday in New York, the NHL team said.

He was expected to need about 12 weeks of recovery time, the Maple Leafs said in a post on social media.

Matthews tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during a game against the Anaheim Ducks on March 12. Ducks captain Radko Gudas received a five-game suspension for the knee-on-knee hit.

Matthews recorded 53 points (27-26) this season for the Maple Leafs, who are playing out the string on the campaign.

New trial ordered in ex-Quebec junior hockey player’s sexual assault case

The Canadian Press 1 minute read Yesterday at 4:40 PM CDT

MONTREAL - Quebec's Court of Appeal has ordered a new trial in a sexual assault case involving ex-Quebec junior hockey player Noah Corson.

The victim, 15, was allegedly assaulted in 2016 in Drummondville during group sex involving Corson and two other minors accused in the case.

A Quebec court judge found Corson, now 28, guilty, ruling he did not take all reasonable measures to verify the age of the victim, whose identity is protected by a publication ban.

In a ruling Thursday, the province's highest court overturned the guilty verdict rendered by a judge in February 2024, determining he failed to consider evidence and testimony that supported Corson's defence that it was an honest but mistaken belief the victim was the same age as him.
