Sea Bears look to rebound on home court

Joshua Frey-Sam 6 minute read Yesterday at 5:40 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Sea Bears took one on the chin, and now they will try to dust themselves off and find the bounce-back trail for the first time this season.

After dropping a hard-fought 103-101 contest against the Scarborough Shooting Stars in Toronto on Tuesday, the Sea Bears (2-1) will return to the court on Friday to host the two-time reigning Canadian Elite Basketball League champion Niagara River Lions (0-1) at Canada Life Centre (7 p.m.).

The Sea Bears know they were a play or two away from boasting an unblemished record through three games. Instead, they left with a sour taste in their mouth after blowing a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter in Target Score time.

A short memory is imperative.

Fish fried in finale against Cougars

Mike McIntyre 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:15 PM CDT

They may have lost their charter bus to an arsonist, but the Kane County Cougars are leaving Winnipeg with a series victory.

An 11-5 triumph over the Goldeyes on Thursday afternoon in front of 5,885 fans at Blue Cross Park gives the visitors two out of three this week, improving their record to 4-2.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, was unable to build on Wednesday’s 3-2 win and now find themselves with a 1-5 record as the 100-game campaign is off to a sluggish start.

The Goldeyes had scored only 11 runs in their first five games (2-2-2-2-3), so putting a season-high five on the board Thursday at least represents some progress in that department.

Hamilton Hammers name gives new AHL franchise a Steel City identity

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 1:31 PM CDT

HAMILTON - The American Hockey League team coming to Hamilton is drawing inspiration from the city's steelworking history, and its nickname, for its branding.

Team owners Oak View Group (OVG), TD Coliseum and the NHL's New York Islanders jointly announced Thursday that the team playing in the city known colloquially as "The Hammer" will be called, fittingly, the Hamilton Hammers.

The Hammers' name and logo were revealed at an event Thursday attended by Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horvath and representatives from the Islanders, TD Coliseum, Oak View Group, and the AHL.

The logo features crossed hammers, symbolizing Hamilton’s connection to metalworking, and is linked to the Islanders through its orange and blue colour scheme.

‘It’s in my DNA’: Danault back loving hockey life with Canadiens

Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Updated: 12:39 AM CDT

RALEIGH - Phillip Danault found himself in a tough spot.

The veteran centre's role had diminished significantly with the Los Angeles Kings. The result was an ugly stat line of zero goals and five assists through 30 games to begin this season.

His old team threw him a lifeline in December.

And after a period of adjustment with the Canadiens following a trade, Danault is back where he belongs — helping Montreal grind out victories in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Mexico launches a last-minute World Cup campaign to stop a homophobic chant

Carlos Rodriguez, The Associated Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 6:28 PM CDT

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Less than a month before the start of the 2026 World Cup, the Mexican Football Federation announced on Thursday a new advertising campaign that seeks to prevent its fans from using a chant considered homophobic during the tournament.

The chant, that has been an unwelcome feature at matches involving Mexico and its fervent fans for two decades, has resurfaced strongly in recent weeks, including the Liga MX playoffs matches held just last weekend.

The name of the advertising campaign launched by the Mexican Federation is “The Wave Yes, The Chant No” and it features former Mexican national team players from the 1986 World Cup.

Mexican Wave dates to 1986

Bombers’ vets reminisce on their own pre-season debuts

Zach Collaros was thrown to the wolves in his first career pre-season game.

It was back in 2012 when the University of Cincinnati product was trying to break into the three-down league with the Toronto Argonauts.

He had only been around for one practice and received just one measly rep, and yet, then head coach Scott Milanovich tapped him on the shoulder and told him he was going into the game — a matchup against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at the old Ivor Wynne Stadium — in the fourth quarter.

“It’s amazing these kids get all these reps now,” said the Blue Bombers quarterback with a grin earlier this week.

Knicks move 2 wins from the NBA Finals with a 109-93 victory over the Cavs

Brian Mahoney, The Associated Press 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:12 PM CDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Josh Hart scored a playoff career-high 26 points, Jalen Brunson had 19 points and 14 assists, and the New York Knicks moved halfway to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999 by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-93 on Thursday night.

Mikal Bridges also scored 19 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 18 points and 13 rebounds to help the Knicks win their ninth straight game. That's the NBA's longest postseason winning streak since the Boston Celtics won 10 straight on their way to the 2024 championship.

Hart went 5 from 11 from 3-point range, burning a defensive strategy that seemed built around leaving him open from long range, and also had seven assists.

“Just a whale of a game from Josh,” Knicks coach Mike Brown said.

Goldeyes roster a reflection of baseball’s global impact

Mike McIntyre 6 minute read Wednesday, May. 20, 2026

Take a look around the Winnipeg Goldeyes clubhouse and one thing quickly becomes evident: this is quite the international school of Fish.

Eight different countries are represented on the current roster of 25 players, which might just make them the United Nations of the American Association.

“So many different cultures. It’s good to have all of them,” outfielder Roby Enriquez told the Free Press on Wednesday prior to his team facing the Kane County Cougars at Blue Cross Park.

“It’s a lot of fun, being with guys from around the world. You learn about language and food, experience different personalities. It’s a blessing to have them here on one team.”
