Good morning!

Your forecast: A great poet once said, “Freedom lies in being bold.” It will take some inner courage to walk out to your vehicle this morning, because you’ll see windows in desperate need of scraping. At midnight, the temperature was 5 C but by 6 a.m., the thermometer read -2 C in Winnipeg. That’s as cold as it’s been since April. And that’s why we chose a quote from legendary American poet Robert Frost. (Cue the groans.) Environment Canada is still promising a pretty good day, with lots of sunshine and a daytime high of 14 C. Clouds and the possibility of rain exist for Wednesday and Thursday, with highs of 18 C and 17 C, respectively. However, the sunshine returns Friday and we’re in for a terrific weekend, with temperatures rising to as high as 18 C.

Canada loses theatre great: One of the country’s true legends of the stage lost his battle with cancer Monday evening. Michael Burgess died in a Toronto hospice at the age of 70. Burgess dazzled audiences as Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables” and was well-known to sports fans for his stirring rendition of “O Canada.” Said theatre impresario David Mirvish of the famous Regina-born tenor: “He was magnificent in the role and led the all-Canadian cast to great heights. He will be sorely missed.” Burgess played the role of Valjean in more than 1,000 performances, and also had several television roles. Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre and Royal Alexandra Theatre will dim their marquee lights Tuesday night for two minutes in his memory. READ MORE

Selinger promises to do better: Manitoba’s premier has turned to apologetic messaging as polls have the New Democrats with the support of only 25 per cent of decided voters. A Probe Research poll conducted on behalf of the Free Press has the NDP trailing the Progressive Conservatives by 20 points seven months before the next provincial election. In a Monday interview with the FP, Premier Greg Selinger asserted his party must regain the support of Manitobans prior to the April 2016 vote. “We know we’ve made some mistakes. We know we’ve disappointed some people on some things,” he said. The NDP is still reeling from the 2014-2015 internal revolt that nearly cost Selinger his job and led to the departure or resignation of high-profile party staff and elected officials. READ MORE

He’s his father’s son: Justin Trudeau wasn’t shy about defending the legacy of past Liberal governments, including that led by his father. In addition to praising Lester B.
