Your forecast: There’s really no point in sugar-coating things — southern Manitoba is locked in a cold snap for the next five or six days. Environment Canada is calling for a 60 per cent chance of light snow this morning, winds from the north at 20 km/h by noon and a high of -16 C. Tonight, the mercury drops to -23 C, with the breeze making it feel like -33. On Friday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, a high of -21 C and a wind chill of -34. The daytime high for Saturday, Sunday and Monday is expected to be just -21 C.

Tragedy floods families: Candice Nora Nepinak, 31, and Vanessa Louise Nepinak, 35, two sisters of Tanya Nepinak who has been missing since September 2011, are charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder following the city’s first homicide of 2016 on Tuesday night. Cynthia Marie French, 35, died after being stabbed by scissors inside a rooming house suite in the 500 block of William Avenue. Her sister was also stabbed but is recovering. READ MORE

Antidote for fentanyl overdosing: Local health officials, responding to a recent spike in deaths figures — 29 deaths in the province in 2015 — and close calls due to the illegal use of fentanyl, announced Wednesday that drug addicts will receive kits containing an antidote to the powerful opioid. The 1,300 kits contain naloxone, which can revive someone who has overdosed on any opioid. READ MORE

Lake for late soldier: Pte. Sidney Halliday, a First World War soldier from Boissevain whose remains were found a decade ago in France, will have a lake in Duck Mountain Provincial Park named in his honour today. This is the first in a program to commemorate those killed in the First World War by giving their names to land forms. The province ran a similar program naming geographic features after those who died in the Second World War, but has exhausted its list of 4,206 names. READ MORE

Gynecological cancer: Winnipeg’s Breast Cancer Centre of Hope will announce an expansion today to include women and their families facing gynecological cancers. A news release from CancerCare Manitoba said the change responds to the increasing incidence of other cancers among women, including about 400 diagnosed with a gynecological cancer in Manitoba each year.

Changing stripes: Tyler Duncan, who was a member of the NDP until Tuesday when he joined the Liberals to run as their candidate in The Pas in the upcoming April provincial election, says the NDP is “aging out,” and the province is in need of renewal. Duncan, 19, lives in Norway House Cree Nation and has been a youth chief there. READ MORE

Codeine by prescription only: The College of Pharmacists of Manitoba announced Wednesday that all drugs containing codeine will require a prescription and be tracked through the province’s Drug Programs Information Network. This includes previously exempted codeine products, such as Tylenol 1, Robaxacet-8, Calmylin and cough syrups containing codeine. READ MORE

#Powerball: The Powerball lottery jackpot of a mind-blowing US$1.5 billion will be split at least three ways. Sorry to folks in Manitoba who dipped south to North Dakota to get some tickets. The winners are in California, Tennessee and Florida. For the record, the winning numbers were 08, 27, 34, 04 and 19, and the Powerball was 10. On Jan. 14, 2002: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Canadian comedy icon Frank Schuster had died. The Victorian Order of Nurses demanded that some former employees pay back thousands of dollars in overpayments or face lawsuits. Because of financial miscaculations by VON when the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority took over home care services, 66 workers were overpaid on their final cheques and 195 workers were underpaid. Canada’s central bank was expected to lower its key lending rate, which stood at 2.25 per cent.
