On Jan. 25, 1939: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a suspect was sought after a child had been found murdered. Her caregiver in the home had been confronted by a man demanding certain documents of her and who then restrained her. The six-year-old girl’s father, Steve Eiler, had been away from the home on Young Street, having received a mysterious letter asking if he was interested in securing evidence against his wife. Eiler and his wife had separated in 1935 and divorce proceedings were pending. He had care of their two daughters. The mysterious sender of the letter never appeared at the place appointed, and Eiler discovered the tragedy when he returned home. Police had so far made no arrests.
