Good morning!

Your forecast: Does today’s weather forecast really matter to city, provincial or federal government workers? Easter Monday means a day off for most of those folks, and, if Head Start crew members had that luxury, we’d stay in bed until noon and then sit around in our pajamas all day watching Hawaii Life reruns on the HGTV network. But if you’re out and about today, expect plenty of sunshine and a high of 7 C, while Tuesday’s high is expected to be 10 C under a partly sunny sky. Wednesday and Thursday are projected to be 7 C and 6 C, respectively.

Honouring a little boy: On Easter Sunday morning, a congregation of about 200 people at Austin Evangelical Fellowship prayed for little Chase Martens and his family. The two-year-old boy, missing for more than four days, was found dead in a creek about a half a kilometres from his rural home near Austin on Saturday. On Sunday evening, the toddler’s parents, Thomas Martens and Destiny Turner, together with a few dozen family members and friends, gathered near Pine Creek for a vigil for the little boy whose disappearance drew hundreds of volunteer searchers. The city says the rare honour has not been granted to a former mayor in decades. The public will have a chance to pay their respects today and Tuesday before Wednesday’s funeral services.

Playing out the string: The Winnipeg Jets, officially eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoff race over the weekend, play their final three homes games of the 2015-16 NHL season this week. Costly curling loss: It’s usually difficult for a curling team to rebound from a tough loss and get re-energized for a bronze-medal game, but Canada had a lot to play for Sunday at the world women’s curling championship in Swift Current, Sask. Unfortunately, Manitoba native Chelsea Carey and her Alberta team couldn’t pull it off, losing 9-8 to Russia. That means that with no medal, the Scotties Tournament of Champions national winners do not get an automatic berth into next year’s Olympic qualifying tournament. Switzerland beat Japan to win the world title Sunday. READ MORE
