Wheaties gain steam: Down two games to one, the Brandon Wheat Kings will try to pull even with the Edmonton Oil Kings in their Western Hockey League first-round playoff series tonight in the Alberta city. Brandon lost a pair of games at home last weekend but dumped the Oil Kings 3-1 on Wednesday night in Edmonton to get back in the best-of-seven series. The puck drops tonight at 8 p.m. CST.

Kroppy: The crowd at MTS Centre gave their favourite fellow Winnipeg Jets fan a standing ovation Wednesday night. Len Kropioski, 97, of Kenora, a Second World War veteran who is always shown on the scoreboard standing at attention and saluting his country at the end of ‘O Canada,’ returned to the rink after an extended stay in hospital. Even Jets and Ottawa Senators players tapped their sticks for Kroppy, who was brought to tears by the show of love.

On March 31, 1990: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that RCMP were ready to ask the Crown to lay murder charges in the disappearance of Steinbach boy David Wiebe, who had been missing since 1978. In Winnipeg, the federal Liberal party was to hold its convention to select a new leader, with Jean Chrétien garnering so much support nationally that rival candidates Paul Martin and Sheila Copps seemed to have agreed not to compete with each other for delegates.
