In a far, far away land: The big three political parties are touting some candidates that live nowhere near the riding they’re running to represent. The NDP have nine Winnipeg residents running in rural Manitoba, the Liberals — who have no candidate at all in five ridings — have eight candidates running far from their homes, most of them living in Winnipeg. Hometown hoedown: Winnipeg played host to the final instalment of this year’s Hometown Hockey cross-Canada tour this past weekend. Hosted by Ron MacLean and Tara Slone, the two-day event brought together thousands of hockey fans from across the province to the historic The Forks in the heart of the city. READ MORE
More money, more schools: An intrepid political party could garner some more votes if it promised the Winnipeg School Division the tens of millions it is looking for to open a couple of new schools in the city. The WSD wants a new high school close to Sisler High School and Maples Collegiate. The other school, a nursery to Grade 8 French milieu school, would replace the aging Sir William Osler School. On the campaign trail: Today on the campaign trail, PC Leader Brian Pallister will announce a new commitment to lower taxes for Manitobans at the campaign office of St. James candidate Scott Johnston at 10 a.m. Pallister will hold a rally at 6 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel at Polo Park. Liberal Leader Rana Bohkari will talk legislative costs savings at Manitoba’s Legislature at 11:30 a.m. And not to be forgotten, NDP Leader Greg Selinger will make a trades announcement at the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Manitoba at 10 a.m.

Why win now?: The Winnipeg Jets took down the Minnesota Wild 5-1 on Sunday night at MTS Centre. The meaningless win did nothing to help their doomed season, and it did even less to help their chances of snagging top prospect Auston Matthews at this year’s draft. Winnipeg moved to 72 points on the season with the win, five points up on the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers. The win also made it impossible for the Jets to finish last in the NHL, and that much tougher to win the top pick in the draft lottery. READ MORE
Junos wrap-up: The Weeknd and Buffy Sainte-Marie were the only two multiple award winners at this past weekend’s Junos. The Weeknd snagged artist and R&B/soul recording of the year as well as songwriter of the year. Saskatchewan’s Sainte-Marie took home two honours, one for aboriginal album and the other for contemporary roots album of the year. Justin Bieber laid claim to pop album of the year and Adele’s 25 album won international album of the year. READ MORE
Fishing in different streams: Manitoba’s three major political parties are split on how they’d handle the fisheries monopoly in the province. All three parties have plans for the existing single-desk marketer, Freshwater Fishing Marketing Corp., which oversees buying, processes, markets and exports from some 1,700 commercial fishers. The Progressive Conservatives would see it so to allow fishers to do with their catch as they see fit. The NDP on the other hand, would keep things status quo. The Liberals would opt out of the single desk if the Crown corporation opted against allowing fishers to sell their less desirable fish such as carp. READ MORE

On April 4, 2009: The quintessential Canadian war epic Passchendaele, directed by Paul Gross, was the big winner at the Genie Awards, picking up six statues including Best Motion Picture, at a ceremony held for the first time outside of Toronto or Montreal. Passchendaele was partly shot at the Canadian Forces base in Shilo, with soldiers stations there picking up jobs as extras. READ MORE
