Toddler recovering: A 15-month-old girl who plunged from a second-storey window Saturday is expected to make a full recovery. Emma-Marie Anderson fell through the screened window on the family’s apartment in the 100 block of Mayfair Avenue when her mother looked away for a few minutes. The child was rushed to hospital in critical condition with skull and neck injuries, but her father said on Monday the child is recovering well and they hope she can come home by the end of the week. The parents say their ordeal was made worse by cruel online comments about their parenting skills. READ MORE

On Sept. 6, 1975: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that U.S. President Gerald Ford narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while in Sacramento, Ca., when a woman who was a follower of Charles Manson confronted the president at point-blank range with a .45 automatic pistol. She failed to shoot the president in part because her weapon had not been properly cocked, according to the Secret Service. In Winnipeg, police sought a man after five people were shot in a Main Street Hotel.
