24-hour gambling: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is looking at rolling the dice around the clock – at least on a trial basis. Beginning Dec. 2, the corporation will begin a pilot project that will see two provincially run casinos in Winnipeg – McPhillips Street Station and Club Regent – open 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays for the next four months. Fentanyl victim ID’d: One of three people found dead this week in northwest Winnipeg of a suspected fentanyl overdose has been identified as Aayla Asham, a 21-year-old mother of two. The woman’s younger sister took to social media on Thursday to raise awareness of the consequences of using the potent opioid. The bodies of two other people – a man and a woman – were also discovered in the Petriw Bay home on Wednesday. READ MORE
Mental illness report: A new study suggests the rate of mental illness among Manitoba children is almost double the national average and even higher in Winnipeg’s inner city neighbourhoods and the province’s north. About one in seven Manitoba kids between the ages of six and 19 was diagnosed with a mental disorder by a physician between 2009 and 2013, according to the study by University of Manitoba researchers.
