The claim is that Toews ran afoul of the Conflict of Interest Act after leaving politics in 2013 when he sold consulting services to two different Manitoba First Nations before he was appointed to the bench in 2014. “Yuletide Bandit” free: Michael Syrnyk, 46, was granted statutory release on the weekend after serving two-thirds of a lengthy sentence. He was known as the Yuletide Bandit after a seven-year spree that often centred around the holiday season. It included 21 armed robberies of mostly banks and armoured-car guards — many of which involved the exchange of gunfire. He stole more than $300,000. Mike McIntyre reports. READ MORE

Improved recycling: A press conference at the Manitoba legislature at 10:30 a.m. today will announce several recycling initiatives, including new infrastructure for cottages and campgrounds, a partnership with Manitoba property managers, an initiative for government-owned buildings and a challenge to Manitobans to be more proactive about recycling in commercial spaces.
Changes to Fort Rouge: An open house this evening will invite feedback on concept plans for McKittrick Park and the green space located at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre site’s northeast corner, including improvements to the swing sets, pathways, and park benches. The open house is from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the leisure centre, 625 Osborne St.

School names reconsidered: The Winnipeg School Division is starting a dialogue about the possibility of changing the names of some Winnipeg schools. Trustee Mark Wasyliw said: “A lot of these names were from 100 years ago… and tend to be remnants of old British colonial history and have nothing to do with Canada, nothing to do with Manitoba.” READ MORE
