Alcoholism’s high cost: Manitoba Health released on Monday a ground-breaking study analyzing anonymous data focusing on 53,625 people diagnosed with an “alcohol-use disorder” between 1990 and 2015. It chronicles physical disorders, such as liver damage. It also found a gradual increase in subjects’ use of welfare, social housing and involvement with Child and Family Services. What’s happening today

Sentencing today: A sentencing hearing is scheduled for today for Winnipeg musician Ron Siwicki, who pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death for letting his 89-year-old mother lie the floor of the home they shared for weeks after she fell out of bed. Katie May will cover the sentencing.

Play ball: One of the most pleasant places to spend a summer evening is at Shaw Park watching the Goldeyes play baseball. It’s a gorgeous setting, the crowd is lively and the tickets are priced low enough to take the family. The Wichita Wingnuts are in town tonight. Opening pitch is at 7 p.m.

Watch the youngsters in action: The annual Winnipeg Jets development camp on-ice sessions start today. Forwards such as 2017 first-round pick Kristian Vesalainen practice at 10:35 a.m, while defencemen skate at 11:50 a.m. It’s at Bell MTS Place and is open to the public.
