On Dec. 24, 1921: The Manitoba Free Press reported that in Ottawa, different factions of Liberalism in Parliament, the Liberals and Progressives, struggled to find common ground. In Washington, D.C., Eugene V. Debs, a former socialist candidate for president serving 10 years in prison for violating the Espionage Act, would be freed on Christmas Day.
