Border briefing: In Washington, congressional leaders from both parties are expected to attend a White House briefing on border security this afternoon. The meeting, amid a partial shutdown of the U.S. government, is happening one day before Democrats take control of the House of Representatives.

On Jan. 2, 1981: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that former mayoral candidate Al Golden helped make his fourth arrest within a year, when he came upon three men stealing out of his home at 2 a.m.; Golden pursued and restrained one of the men and called police. Media sage Marshall McLuhan’s death prompted new examination of his work. In Winnipeg, the jobs outlook was bleak, as several major employers planned to cut back on staff. A poll found that the vast majority of people in Western Canada did not want the region to separate from the country.
