Swapping roles: A federal cabinet shuffle is taking place this morning, with Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott taking the post of retiring Treasury Board president Scott Brison. On Jan. 14, 1960: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Indigenous community at Sandy Bay was facing starvation in the face of government indifference and public unconcern; with fishing and trapping not generating much income, and with farm work scarce, joblessness and poverty were hitting the community hard. J.C. Irvine of Winnipeg became Manitoba’s first woman senator. Ottawa planned to “extend the federal vote to Indians,” as it was highlighted in the throne speech.
