On March 13, 1984: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a woman in Bedford, N.Y., was stunned to receive a telephone bill of $109,500 due to charges for long-distance calls, most of which she never made. Sherritt Gordon Mines agreed to proceed with a mine deepening project in Leaf Rapids, but only if it received $17 million in financing from the federal and provincial governments. Mike Riley, skip of Manitoba’s Canadian Brier championship winning team, received a hero’s welcome in Winnipeg. READ MORE
