On April 9, 1976: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that flooding along the Souris River led to the waters rising six feet and breaking through sandbag dikes, forcing an evacuation of the town of Souris, and also destroying the town’s 72-year-old swinging bridge. In Ottawa, former assistants to two federal cabinet ministers were under investigation in the so-called Sky Shops affairs; at issue was the granting of duty-free lease extensions for Sky Shops Ltd. of Montreal.
