Death toll at 290: Sri Lanka’s health minister says his government failed to heed warnings from intelligence agencies before co-ordinated attacks at churches and luxury hotels killed at least 290 people. Seven suicide bombers from a militant group named National Thowfeek Jamaath were responsible, the government said. Kevin Rollason spoke with members of Winnipeg’s Sri Lankan community Sunday. Swimming pool ‘incident’: Three people were taken to hospital in critical condition Sunday after an incident in a swimming pool at the Courts of St. James apartments. Sunday night, a police spokesman said the incident involved a father and two sons.

On April 22, 1957: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the federal election campaign kicked off officially in Winnipeg as enumerators started their rounds listing the names of eligible voters ahead of the June 10 election. Speaking for the Eisenhower administration, John Foster Dulles said satellite countries of the U.S.S.R. in Europe must be freed of Russian influence; the Soviets similarly advocated for a pullout of U.S. forces from Europe. Two Manitoba children died as a result of gun mishaps over the Easter weekend.
