Half-marathon for mom: Shane Dyck’s mother died in 2018 from leukemia and lymphoma, and this year he ran the Winnipeg Police Service Half Marathon on Sunday in her memory. Dyck completed the half-marathon in spite of a motorcycle accident six years ago that left him with a one per cent chance of walking again. READ MORE

School wins award: For the third time in 10 years a Seven Oaks School Division school has won a national award for innovation in teaching and learning. The Maples Met School has been awarded this year’s Ken Spencer Award for Innovation in Teaching and Learning for its Met Innovation Centre for Entrepreneurship program. Martin Cash reports. On May 6, 1978: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that substances thought to cause cancer in animals had been found in Winnipeg’s drinking water, according to the city’s waterworks, waste and disposal division. In Beirut, Lebanese Muslims and Christians traded tank, mortar and bazooka fire, leaving four dead and 25 wounded. In Italy, police searched for former prime minister Aldo Moro, who had been kidnapped by members of the Red Brigade and was feared dead.
